Hidden Characters in AI Text, PDFs and Web Pages: How to Find and Remove Them

Text that looks normal can carry special spaces and zero-width characters. What they break and how to clean them.

The problem

Text copied from AI chatbots, PDF files, websites or WhatsApp sometimes carries invisible characters, such as a no-break space (U+00A0), narrow no-break space (U+202F) or zero width space (U+200B). It looks normal on screen, but software reads it differently.

Where do they come from?

They usually come from document formatting and how text is displayed: PDFs store word gaps in special ways, websites use  , and some apps add text-direction marks. Their presence isn’t proof that a text was written by AI.

What can break?

Pasted passwords don’t match, spreadsheet formulas fail to read numbers, find-and-replace misses words, code throws errors, URL slugs get odd characters, and SEO title lengths come out wrong.

How to check

Paste the text into the Invisible Character Detector. Every hidden character is highlighted in yellow with its name and code, and you can see how many there are.

How to clean it

Open the Clean text tab, or go straight to Remove Invisible Characters. Choose whether to delete zero-width characters and turn odd spaces into normal ones, then copy the result.

Frequently asked questions

Does cleaning change my text?

No. Only invisible characters are removed or replaced with normal spaces.

Does it work on long text?

Yes. It runs in your browser, so long text is still processed quickly.
